Usage Note

Zar is an invariable masculine noun in Italian — the plural is also zar (no ending change). It refers to the Russian emperors or, figuratively, to any powerful unilateral authority: lo zar del petrolio (the oil tsar). The spelling czar is occasionally seen in older texts but zar is the standard modern form.
