vescovo
bishop
noun VEH-skoh-voh Rare
Origin: Latin episcopus, from Greek episkopos (overseer).
Usage Note
Vescovo is the Catholic bishop, one rank above prete (priest) and below cardinale. In chess, however, the bishop is called alfiere, not vescovo. The female form vescova exists but is rare and contested. The plural is regular: i vescovi.
Examples
"Il vescovo ha benedetto la folla."
Natural Translation
The bishop blessed the crowd.
