usufruire

to make use of, to avail oneself of

verb oo-zoo-FRWEE-reh Rare

Origin: From Latin usufructus, 'use and enjoyment'.

Usage Note

Usufruire takes avere and is always followed by di: usufruire di un servizio ('to make use of a service'). It is a formal, bureaucratic verb — official documents and public notices use it extensively. In everyday Italian the same idea is expressed with avvalersi di, servirsi di, or simply usare. Conjugates as a regular -ire verb with -isc- infix: usufruisco, usufruisci.
