Talvolta is slightly more formal or literary than the everyday synonym a volte; both mean 'sometimes'. In spoken Italian a volte is preferred; talvolta appears in written or formal registers. It can open or close a sentence without change of meaning. Do not confuse with qualche volta ('occasionally', implying less frequency).
