Stone is used in Italian texts — particularly sports journalism — as a loanword for the British imperial unit of weight equal to 14 pounds (about 6.35 kg). It is invariable and masculine (lo stone). Outside the sporting context, Italians use chilogrammi (kg); stone appears almost exclusively when discussing British or Irish athletes.
