sposato

married

adjective spoh-ZAH-toh Rare

Usage Note

Sposato is the past participle of sposare (to marry) used as an adjective. It agrees in gender and number: sposato (m sg), sposata (f sg), sposati (m pl), sposate (f pl). In Italian, to say 'I got married' you use the reflexive: mi sono sposato/a with essere as the auxiliary. Do not say ho sposato to mean 'I got married' — ho sposato Maria means 'I married Maria' (transitive, different nuance).

Examples

"Sono sposato da dieci anni."

Natural Translation

I have been married for ten years.
