Sottoscrivere is used for signing formal documents or subscribing to agreements — sottoscrivere un contratto means signing a contract. It also appears in finance with the sense of 'to underwrite' shares. The reflexive sottoscriversi is rarely used; prefer the plain form. Its irregular past participle is sottoscritto.
