Usage Note
Semestre is always masculine: il primo semestre (the first semester). Italian universities divide the academic year into two semestri. In business contexts it means a six-month financial period: i dati del secondo semestre (second-half results). Do not confuse with trimestre (quarter, three months) or bimestre (two months).
