scherzoso

playful, jokingly

adjective sker-DZOH-zoh Rare

Usage Note

Scherzoso describes a playful, light-hearted tone — in speech, writing, or music (a tempo scherzoso in a score). Its root is scherzo (joke, jest), also familiar as a musical term. Feminine form: scherzosa; adverb: scherzosamente. Do not confuse with buffo (funny, comic) — scherzoso emphasises the playful intent rather than the comic effect.
