Usage Note

Scannare means to kill an animal by cutting its throat (scannare un maiale), and by extension to slaughter brutally. The reciprocal scannarsi is colloquial for fighting bitterly. Note that 'to scan' a document is scansionare (or colloquially scannerizzare), not scannare. Takes avere as its auxiliary.
