retro
back, rear
noun REH-troh Rare
Origin: From Latin retro (behind, backwards).
Also means
reverse side
Usage Note
Retro is invariable — the plural is identical to the singular (il retro, i retro). It can refer to the back of a building, the reverse of a coin or document, or the rear of a vehicle. As a prefix, retro- forms many compounds (retromarcia = reverse gear, retroguardia = rearguard). Do not confuse with the adjective retrò (retro, vintage style), which carries an accent.
Examples
"Il giardino si trova sul retro della casa."
Natural Translation
The garden is at the back of the house.
