reggimento

regiment

noun reh-jee-MEN-toh Rare

Origin: Late Latin regimentum (rule, direction).

Usage Note

Reggimento (plural reggimenti) is primarily a military unit of several battalions, commanded by a colonel. Historically it also meant 'governance' or 'rule' (from reggere, to rule), a sense now largely archaic. In Italian military history reggimenti played a prominent role in the Risorgimento.

Examples

"Il reggimento è partito per il fronte all'alba."

Natural Translation

The regiment left for the front at dawn.
