Usage Note

Raccomandazione has two common uses: a formal letter or personal endorsement (lettera di raccomandazione = letter of recommendation) and, colloquially, the act of using personal connections to gain an advantage — a culturally loaded concept in Italian society. The verb raccomandare also means 'to urge' or 'to advise', as in ti raccomando la pazienza = 'I urge patience on you'.
