prolungare
to prolong, to extend
verb proh-loon-GAH-reh Rare
Origin: From Latin prolongare, 'to lengthen'.
Usage Note
Prolungare is used for extending time (prolungare una scadenza = to extend a deadline), space (prolungare una linea = to extend a line), or duration (prolungare il soggiorno = to prolong one's stay). It takes avere in compound tenses and should not be confused with allungare, which more often means to lengthen a physical object.
Examples
"Hanno deciso di prolungare il contratto di un anno."
Natural Translation
They decided to extend the contract by one year.
