Usage Note
Pretorio refers to the Roman praetor or praetorium (the general's tent or the governor's court). Today in Italian it survives mainly in historical and legal contexts — palazzo pretorio is the name still borne by many medieval civic buildings in Tuscany and Umbria that once served as the seat of the podestà. The feminine form is pretoria.
