piovano

rainwater (adjective)

adjective pyoh-VAH-noh Rare

Origin: Latin pluvianus, from pluvia (rain)

Usage Note

Piovano is an attributive adjective meaning 'of rainwater' and appears almost exclusively in the set phrase acqua piovana (rainwater). It is not used as a predicate (la pioggia è piovana would be odd). The standalone noun for rain is pioggia. In some regional dialects piovano can also mean a parish priest, but in standard Italian this meaning is obsolete.
