pila

battery

noun PEE-lah Rare

Also means

pile

Usage Note

Pila primarily means a (disposable) battery or cell in everyday Italian: cambiare le pile (change the batteries). It also means a pile or stack of objects. For a rechargeable battery pack (as in a phone or laptop), Italians often use batteria instead. The plural is pile. The false-friend risk: English 'pile' as in a stack is mucchio or pila, but pila for electricity is the more distinctive Italian meaning.

Examples

"Le pile del telecomando sono scariche."

Natural Translation

The remote control's batteries are dead.
