pedaggio
toll; toll fee
noun peh-DAH-joh Rare
Origin: From Medieval Latin pedaticum, a foot-passage tax.
Usage Note
Pedaggio is the fee paid to use a motorway (autostrada) or bridge; you pay it at a casello (toll booth). The plural is regular: pedaggi. In Italy most motorways are tolled, so pagare il pedaggio is a very practical phrase. Do not confuse with pedagogo (pedagogue, teacher) despite the similar sound.
Examples
"Dobbiamo pagare il pedaggio all'uscita."
Natural Translation
We have to pay the toll at the exit.
