obiezione

objection

noun oh-byeh-TSYOH-neh Rare

Origin: Latin obiectio, from obicere, to throw against

Usage Note

Obiezione is used in legal, debate, and everyday contexts: a lawyer raises un'obiezione in court, and in conversation you can say ho un'obiezione to signal disagreement. Note the elision to un'obiezione (feminine). Italian borrowed obiezione di coscienza from the Latin legal tradition to mean 'conscientious objection'.

Examples

"Il giudice ha respinto l'obiezione dell'avvocato."

Natural Translation

The judge rejected the lawyer's objection.
