Usage Note

Mortoro (also mortorio) is a regional or literary term for a funeral procession or, more broadly, any gathering associated with death and mourning. It is also used figuratively and informally to describe a depressingly dull or gloomy event or atmosphere: Che mortoro questa festa! ('What a funeral this party is!'). The word is more common in central and southern Italian dialects than in standard usage.
