Usage Note
Mar is a truncated form of mare used almost exclusively before a proper noun in geographical names: il Mar Mediterraneo, il Mar Rosso, il Mar Nero. It never stands alone as a common noun — in all other contexts, the full form mare is required.
Examples
"Il Mar Mediterraneo è molto caldo d'estate."
Natural Translation
The Mediterranean Sea is very warm in summer.
