licenza

licence

noun lee-CHEN-tsah Common

Origin: from Latin 'licentia'

Also means

leave

Usage Note

Licenza is a permit or licence, but for soldiers it also means a period of 'leave', as in andare in licenza. Beware the false friend: it does not mean academic 'licence' in the casual English sense; the plural is licenze.

Examples

"Ho ottenuto la licenza di guida."

Natural Translation

I got the driving licence.

Literal Translation

I-have obtained the licence of driving.
