lembo

hem

noun LEM-boh Rare

Origin: Latin limbus 'border, hem'

Also means

strip (of land or fabric)

Usage Note

Lembo originally meant the hem or edge of a garment, and by extension any narrow strip or fringe — un lembo di terra (a strip of land), un lembo di cielo (a patch of sky). It is poetic and literary in most uses, rarely heard in everyday conversation where orlo (hem, edge) or striscia (strip) would be more natural. The plural is lembi.

Examples

"Un lembo di nebbia copriva la valle."

Natural Translation

A strip of fog covered the valley.
