Origin: From Latin internus (internal, interior).

Internare means to confine someone in a hospital, camp, or institution against their will — internare in un ospedale psichiatrico (to commit to a psychiatric hospital), internare in un campo di prigionia (to intern in a prison camp). It is distinct from ricoverare (to hospitalise voluntarily). The past participle internato also functions as a noun meaning 'internee' or 'boarding school'.
