indulto

pardon

noun een-DOOL-toh Rare

Origin: From Latin indultum (granted, permitted), past participle of indulgere.

Also means

amnesty

Usage Note

Indulto is a collective pardon granted by the state that reduces or cancels sentences already being served, without erasing the criminal record — unlike amnistia, which also cancels the crime itself. In Italy, an indulto requires a two-thirds majority in parliament. Do not confuse it with grazia (individual presidential pardon).

Examples

"Il parlamento approvò un indulto per ridurre il sovraffollamento."

Natural Translation

Parliament approved a pardon to reduce overcrowding.
