Origin: Germanic wisa (way, manner)

way

Usage Note

Guisa is an archaic or literary noun meaning manner or fashion, surviving mainly in the fixed phrase a guisa di (in the manner of, like). It is rarely used outside set expressions in modern Italian; in everyday speech, modo or maniera are the standard equivalents. Its Germanic origin makes it one of the few Italian words not derived from Latin.

Examples

"Si muoveva a guisa di fantasma."

Natural Translation

He moved like a ghost.

Literal Translation

He-moved in manner of ghost.
