Usage Note
Gioiello (plural gioielli) means a jewel, gem, or piece of jewellery. The shop where you buy jewellery is a gioielleria. Gioiello is also used figuratively for something precious: questo palazzo è un gioiello dell'architettura barocca ('this palace is a gem of Baroque architecture'). The root is gioia (joy), reflecting the association of gems with delight.
