Gendarme is a French loanword used in Italian to refer to a gendarme (in France or historically), or more loosely to any police officer or guard. It is masculine (il gendarme), plural gendarmi. In modern Italian it has a slightly archaic or foreign flavour; poliziotto is the everyday word for a police officer.
