adjective froot-TEE-feh-roh Rare

Origin: Latin fructifer (fruit-bearing), from fructus + ferre

profitable

Usage Note

Fruttifero describes both a plant that produces fruit (albero fruttifero) and, figuratively, a financially profitable asset — investimento fruttifero, conto fruttifero (interest-bearing account). The financial sense is at least as common as the botanical one in modern Italian. Do not confuse with frutteto (orchard).
