Usage Note

Freddare in its primary modern sense means to shoot and kill someone: lo hanno freddato davanti a casa (they shot him dead in front of his home). In cooking it means to cool something rapidly — freddare la pasta (to cool the pasta down). The two meanings are context-dependent and belong to very different registers. Takes avere as its auxiliary.
