Fidanzare is most commonly used reflexively: fidanzarsi (con qualcuno) = 'to get engaged to someone' or more loosely 'to start going out with someone'. The noun fidanzato/fidanzata means boyfriend/girlfriend or fiancé/fiancée depending on context. It takes essere as its reflexive auxiliary: si sono fidanzati = 'they got engaged'.
