falsare

to distort; to falsify

verb fal-SAH-reh Rare

Origin: From falso (false) + '-are' verb suffix, from Latin 'falsus'

Usage Note

Falsare takes avere as its auxiliary and means to alter something so that it no longer reflects reality — falsare i risultati ('to skew the results'), falsare la concorrenza ('to distort competition'). It is somewhat more formal than falsificare (to forge/counterfeit documents). In EU legal texts, falsare la concorrenza is a standard phrase for anti-competitive distortion.
