Usage Note

Estorsione (plural estorsioni) is the legal and everyday term for extortion — obtaining money or something of value through coercion or threats. In Italian law it is a specific crime under articolo 629 del Codice Penale. It differs from rapina (robbery, taking by force) in that estorsione involves intimidation rather than direct violence.
