Essa is a formal, rather literary feminine subject pronoun for 'it' (or 'she'), used mainly in written or bureaucratic Italian. In everyday speech people prefer lei for people and simply omit the pronoun for things. Its masculine counterpart is esso and the plurals are esse / essi.
