to exempt

verb eh-zoh-neh-RAH-reh Rare

Also means

to release from duty

Usage Note

Esonerare means to relieve someone of a responsibility, obligation, or duty — commonly used in sports (a coach being sacked) and administrative contexts. The reflexive esimersi is a near-synonym but more formal. It takes avere as auxiliary: ho esonerato il direttore (I dismissed the director).

Natural Translation

The club dismissed the coach after the defeat.
