Usage Note

Esclamare is used to report speech delivered with strong emotion or emphasis: esclamò con gioia — she cried out with joy. It takes avere in compound tenses and is commonly followed by direct speech with a colon: esclamò: 'Basta!'. The related noun is esclamazione (exclamation); the punctuation mark is punto esclamativo (exclamation mark).
