elevare

to raise, to elevate

verb eh-leh-VAH-reh Less Common

Origin: From Latin elevare (to lift up).

Also means

to promote (in rank)

Usage Note

Elevare takes avere. It can be physical (elevare un muro — to raise a wall) but is more often figurative — elevare il livello (to raise the level), elevarsi socialmente (to rise socially). In mathematics, elevare al quadrato means 'to square' a number. The noun elevazione (f) means elevation; elevato as an adjective means 'high, elevated, lofty'.

Examples

Natural Translation

We must raise the quality of the service.
