dimettere
to discharge
verb dee-MET-teh-reh Rare
Origin: Latin dimittere (di- + mittere, to send away)
Also means
to resign
Usage Note
Dimettere is used reflexively — dimettersi — to mean 'to resign from a position', and in medical contexts dimettere un paziente means to discharge a patient from hospital. The auxiliary in the reflexive is essere. A false friend to watch: dimettere does NOT mean 'to demote' (declassare) — it means to send away or release.
Examples
"Il ministro ha deciso di dimettersi."
Natural Translation
The minister decided to resign.
