Usage Note
Dibattimento in legal Italian refers specifically to the oral trial phase of a criminal proceeding — the stage after preliminary hearings where evidence is presented before a judge. In ordinary usage it can also mean a formal debate or discussion. It is not the same as processo (the overall criminal proceeding) or udienza (a court session).
