Conte is a noble title equivalent to 'count' (continental Europe) or 'earl' (Britain). The feminine is la contessa (countess). The title belongs to alta nobiltà (high nobility) below marchese (marquis) and above visconte (viscount). In everyday Italian conte is rarely encountered outside literature, history, and surnames. Do not confuse with conto (bill, account, count-noun).
