colossale

colossal

adjective koh-los-SAH-leh Rare

Origin: From Latin colossalis, from colossus 'giant statue'

Usage Note

Colossale is invariable for gender — it ends in -e and thus has the same form for masculine and feminine (un errore colossale, una stupidità colossale). In informal speech it can mean 'spectacularly bad,' as in una gaffe colossale ('a monumental blunder').
