Usage Note

Cipolla is feminine and one of the most common vegetables in Italian cooking — soffritto di cipolla (onion soffritto) is the base of countless dishes. The plural le cipolle is regular. Do not confuse with scalogno (shallot) or cipollotto (spring onion / scallion).
