chiudere

to close

verb KYOO-deh-reh Common

Origin: Latin claudere

Also means

to shut

Usage Note

Chiudere has an irregular past participle: chiuso. It takes avere as its auxiliary. The reflexive chiudersi means 'to close oneself off' or, of a wound, 'to heal shut'. The adjective chiuso (closed/shut) is very common on shop signs, and also colloquially describes an introverted person (è una persona chiusa).
