Chiave is feminine and used both for a door key and figuratively, as in parola chiave ('keyword') or un ruolo chiave ('a key role'), where it stays singular and invariable as a modifier. In music it is the 'clef', and chiave inglese is a 'monkey wrench'. The ch is pronounced like a hard k.
