Also means
toll plaza
Usage Note
Casello (full form casello autostradale) is the toll station on an Italian motorway (autostrada). Italy's motorway network is largely tolled, so pagare al casello is a routine expression for long-distance drivers. Do not confuse with castello ('castle') — a single extra 's' entirely changes the meaning. The plural is regular: caselli.
Examples
"Ci siamo fermati al casello per pagare il pedaggio."
Natural Translation
We stopped at the tollbooth to pay the toll.
Literal Translation
We ourselves are-stopped at-the tollbooth to pay the toll.
