Cantone most commonly refers to a political subdivision, especially of Switzerland (i cantoni svizzeri). In architecture and colloquial speech it can also mean a corner or nook. The Swiss political sense is by far the dominant modern usage in Italian. Do not confuse with angolo, which is the everyday word for a geometric or street corner.
