Usage Note
Calzino is the diminutive of calza (stocking) and refers to a short ankle sock. The full-length version is la calza or il collant (tights). The plural i calzini is extremely common, as socks naturally come in pairs. In Italian, you often say un calzino for a single sock and complain about calzini spaiati (mismatched socks).
Examples
"Ho perso un calzino in lavatrice."
Natural Translation
I lost a sock in the washing machine.
