blackout
blackout, power outage
noun BLAK-owt Rare
Origin: From English blackout.
Also means
media blackout
Usage Note
Blackout is an invariable masculine noun (plural i blackout, unchanged). It is used for both electrical outages (un blackout elettrico) and information suppression (blackout mediatico). Because it is a loanword, it does not follow Italian pluralisation patterns. In informal speech un'interruzione di corrente is the native alternative for a power cut.
Examples
"Un blackout ha colpito tutta la città stanotte."
Natural Translation
A blackout hit the entire city last night.
