Usage Note

Attenere is almost always used reflexively as attenersi a — 'to abide by, to stick to' — for example attenersi alle regole (to abide by the rules) or attenersi ai fatti (to stick to the facts). As a non-reflexive it is rare and literary. The reflexive attenersi takes essere as its auxiliary.
