Usage Note

Assolvere has two distinct uses: in a legal/religious sense 'to acquit or absolve' (il tribunale lo ha assolto — the court acquitted him), and in a more general sense 'to fulfil or carry out' (assolvere un compito — to carry out a task). The past participle is assolto. It takes avere and is conjugated like other -ere verbs.
